This Activities book is an inexpensive, interactive, and convenient way to add career awareness and career exploration to your middle- or junior-high school curriculum. The activities are designed to be used with the Young

Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook.   The Activities book is for individual student use in class or as homework. It helps young people interact with the Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook information on over 270 jobs, including work duties, skills needed, required education, related school classes, related jobs, earnings, and more. In addition, students learn how to set goals, research careers using a reference book and the Internet, and read a help-wanted ad. They also are introduced to job interviews.

Many but not all of the activities require students to consult the Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. In addition, students can begin some activities by looking up information in the Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook and then finish them without the book in hand.

The Activities book meets National Career Development Guidelines for middle/junior high school competencies IV, V, VI, and VII. Specifically, it helps young people learn the benefits of educational achievement to career opportunities (IV), understand the relationship between work and learning (V), develop the skills to locate and use career information (VI), and learn about the skills necessary to obtain jobs (VII).

Key Features:

  • Activities and exercises are based on information in Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook, now in its fourth edition.

Based on the latest Occupational Outlook Handbook, this popular guidebook is ideal for  helping young people explore careers. It groups together related job descriptions, making it easy to study job options based on interests. The text stresses the connection between school subjects and future careers. The book is grouped into 11  sections based on the main sections of the latest OOH. Within each section are one-page descriptions of related jobs (there are nearly 270 jobs in the book). Each job description includes a brief, easy-to-read overview of the job; school subjects related to the job; suggested activities for trying out the job in “Discover More”; information on earnings, education or training needed, and employment outlook; “something extra”: a fun and interesting fact related to the job; and related jobs described in the book. In addition, the extensive Web directory of online career resources has been completely updated.
